Celebrating Teacher’s Day through Literature: The White Tiger

Hello Readers,

I am Kumkum Hirani, a student of the Department of English, MKBU. This year, we are celebrating Virtual Teacher’s Day with great enthusiasm and creativity. Even though we are not together physically, this online celebration has given us a beautiful chance to express our gratitude and showcase our learning through literature and art.

Teacher’s Day in India :-

Every year on 5th September, India celebrates Teacher’s Day to honor the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan—a philosopher, teacher, and the second President of India. When his students once wished to celebrate his birthday, he humbly suggested that instead of celebrating his birthday alone, the day should be dedicated to all teachers. Since then, this day has been a reminder of the role teachers play in shaping our lives.

Teachers are not only guides in the classroom; they are also mentors who inspire us with knowledge, values, and life lessons. This day reminds us to respect their contribution and the importance of education in our personal and social growth.

My Experience of Virtual Teacher’s Day

Being a part of the Virtual Teacher’s Day celebration was a wonderful experience. I enjoyed a lot while preparing my activity, and at the same time, I learned many new things. The online platform gave me confidence to present my ideas creatively and also allowed me to see how my classmates expressed their gratitude in unique ways.

It was more than just a celebration—it became an opportunity to reflect on how literature can connect us with life, and how teachers guide us to see the world with new perspectives.

My Topic: The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga :-

For this year’s activity, I chose to work on the novel The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga, which won the Booker Prize in 2008. The novel tells the story of Balram Halwai, a man who rises from poverty in rural India to become a successful entrepreneur in modern Bangalore.

The novel deeply explores themes of education, inequality, ambition, morality, and freedom. Balram compares himself to a rare white tiger, symbolizing uniqueness and the courage to break free from society’s cages. His journey made me think about how education and awareness can give us the strength to rise above difficult circumstances.

While preparing this topic, I realized how literature reflects the struggles of real society and teaches us to question injustice. It was inspiring to connect this message with the spirit of Teacher’s Day, which itself celebrates knowledge and learning as the keys to freedom.

Conclusion :

This Teacher’s Day celebration was not just about honoring our teachers, but also about learning in new and creative ways. My project on The White Tiger reminded me that education is the most powerful tool to overcome challenges and rise beyond limitations.

Thank You…
